Aspartame Dangers

AspertaimeChewable VitMillions of Americans gobble down diet sodas, artificial sweeteners and thousands of other products that contain huge amounts of aspartame and never even imagine that they could literally be destroying their health.  Aspartame was discovered by accident in 1965 when James Schlatter, a chemist for G.D. Searle & Company, was testing an anti-ulcer drug.  It is the most common sweetening additive being used in over 6,000 consumer foods, beverages, multivitamins, frozen desserts, cereals, pharmaceutical products, and artificial sweeteners sold worldwide.

One thing that many Americans do not realize is that Donald Rumsfeld played a key role in pushing the approval of aspartame through the FDA.

Donald Rumsfeld became the chief executive officer of worldwide pharmaceutical giant G.D. Searle & Company (later bought out by Monsanto) in 1977, 12 years after aspartame was discovered.

In 1981, after over 15 years of continual FDA disapproval of aspartame, Rumsfeld stated in a Searle sales meeting that he would use “political rather than scientific means” to finally get the FDA to approve the sweetener.

That is just what happened, as aspartame was finally approved shortly after the beginning of the Reagan administration despite the huge objections of some in the scientific community.

While it has a very sweet taste, the truth is that aspartame is much worse for you than sugar is.

Out of 90 independently-funded studies on aspartame, 83 of them found that the artificial sweetener causes one or more serious health problems.

Aspartame contains three very insidious components: methanol, phenylalanine, and aspartic acid. All three of these chemicals have each been shown to either stimulate brain cells to death, severely disrupt hormone balances in the brain or act as a dangerous nerve poison.

The following are a handful of quotes from an article entitled Aspartame: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You. We would definitely recommend that you read that whole article when you get a chance. Here are the quotes about how incredibly bad aspartame is for you…..

Aspartame accounts for over 75 percent of the adverse reactions to food additives reported to the FDA. Many of these reactions are very serious including seizures and death.

A few of the 90 different documented symptoms listed in the report as being caused by aspartame include: Headaches/migraines, dizziness, seizures, nausea, numbness, muscle spasms, weight gain, rashes, depression, fatigue, irritability, tachycardia, insomnia, vision problems, hearing loss, heart palpitations, breathing difficulties, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, loss of taste, tinnitus, vertigo, memory loss, and joint pain.

According to researchers and physicians studying the adverse effects of aspartame, the following chronic illnesses can be triggered or worsened by ingesting of aspartame: Brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, parkinson’s disease, alzheimer’s, mental retardation, lymphoma, birth defects, fibromyalgia, and diabetes.

As you can see, aspartame is no laughing matter.

And did you know that aspartame is 10 percent methanol?

Methanol (also known as wood alcohol) is a very deadly poison.

In fact, methanol poisoning has caused many alcoholics to end up blind or dead.

And did you know that once methanol breaks down inside the body one of the byproducts is formaldehyde?

Here is another quote from the article cited above…..

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol “is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic.” They recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.

The truth is that they have always know how dangerous aspartame is, but because it is so profitable they just keep making it and putting it in what we eat and drink.

So if you want to be healthy you have to watch out for yourself and your family. Don’t count on the FDA to help you.

According to Dr. Janet Hull, adverse reactions and side effects of aspartame include:

blindness in one or both eyes
decreased vision and/or other eye problems such as: blurring, bright flashes, squiggly lines, tunnel vision, decreased night vision
pain in one or both eyes
decreased tears
trouble with contact lenses

Additional symptoms of aspartame toxicity include the most critical symptoms of all…..

irreversible brain damage
birth defects, including mental retardation
peptic ulcers
aspartame addiction and increased craving for sweets
hyperactivity in children
severe depression
aggressive behavior
suicidal tendencies

Aspartame may trigger, mimic, or cause the following illnesses….

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Post-Polio Syndrome
Lyme Disease
Grave’s Disease
Meniere’s Disease
Alzheimer’s Disease
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Mercury sensitivity from Amalgam fillings
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

The sad part is that this long article only begins to touch on the health hazards of aspartame. You can literally research this poison for months and still barely scratch the surface.

We encourage you to do your own research and to find out the truth.

We are moving into very dark times and you are your family are going to need to be as healthy as possible for what is ahead.  You won’t get the truth from the mainstream media, because they are owned and/or supported by the big corporations that produce these harmful products.

The health of your family is too important to risk relying on the assurances of greedy corporate hucksters.  The truth is that aspartame is really, really bad for you.  But each individual will have to make their own decision about whether they will continue to consume it or not.

One drink for one day is advised nothing more. It is better to drink less even if you are not having high blood pressure.

It is very important to stay on top of your health and have a check up at least once a year to ensure that you remain healthy. Many health problems are curable but you need to catch them in time. Do not wait to go see a doctor because it may be too late.

I have to say it as taken me EIGHT years to find out why my legs swelled up to TWENTY FOUR inches round! My doc (UK) didnt help me – Nobody did – I gaines a massive amount of weight and couldnt work out why – Now – I gave up diet coke for a different reason – but now – it seems this could have been the reason behind many of my maladies….. VERY interestng!

Forgot to say I have over past 6 years lost most of the weight i gained (without over eating) i am within 10lbs of my pre-balloon weight. It has taken a long time as now I have Multiple Sclerosis!!! (it isnt mimicing it my mother has it and i also do as have had MRIs etc)

    This stuff should be banned!

Aspartame caused me to have double vision, blurred vison, lips so dry and cracked it looked like I had spent a day in a wind tunnel. I started consumming Aspartame unknowingly when I started a diet program with shakes and bars. I lost 40 pounds and then my body stopped. Everything came to a halt. 5 months after the initial plateau effect was realized, I had a kidney stone. No history or family past with this. Upon investigation, I learned that aspartame leeches magnesium out of your system and one side effect of magnecium deficiency is – you guessed it – kidney stones.
Nasty stuff but what a racket! Create a substance that has bult in addiction qualities, increases cravings for sweets so you consume more sweets made with the “drug” and the cycle continues. The FDA should be banning this product. the fact that they are not proves they are not in business to protect us.

Seriously? Where’s your proof? Where’s the works cited page? I’m not saying your right or wrong but… come on. Just for grins and giggles, read this.

For a numbr of years I was over indulgent in drinking diet pepsi…I was experiencing headaches, sudden drops in blood sugar, muscle cramps, mood swings, insomnia along with other symptoms. I decided to kick the diet pepsi habit once and for all. I quit drinking it two weeks ago, and actually went through a withdrawal ! Well on the other side of the detoxification, I feel much better and actually do not crave it anymore. If you have a penchant for soda wheter it be diet or regular, kick the habit !

This article sheds some light on the dangers od aspartame as an artificial sweetner…I now avoid all foods wit hthis product as well as other artificial sweetners as well. You would be amazed how many products contain this crap….All chewing gum does…amazing !

I completely agree with all you said! And right now I have looked at more recent independent studies which confirmed and further underlined the dangers of aspartame. Visit my blog at I’d like to hear your opinion!

I had a terrible non-stop headache for over 6 weeks. I went to DUKE. The dr. there had NO explanation or effective treatment. I happened to see the Phil Donahue show about bad side effects. It was in my child’s cereal! About 2 weeks after I took it out of my and my child’s diet, my headaches STOPPED. A dentist friend says it could be placed on the laxative shelf at the store…MAJOR laxative. I find it in yogurt, powdered drinks, and do NOT purchase those things. REMEMBER, nutrasweet is just the BRAND name of aspertame. They mean the same thing. AVOID this drug. ASK your restaurant what sweeteners they use in their low calorie puddings, etc. Be informed.

    could someone please clarify…

if we take the dangers of aspartame and fluoride that are stated, and compare them with say, coffee, tobacco, alcohol what can we learn from this?

i understand that alcohol is not good for my body or my brain but the pleasure i get from changing my state of mind once a week, at the moment, makes it worthwhile.

i am concerned about fluoride, (and i think aspartame is disgusting from all angles) but to put the dangers into perspective by comparison could be very helpful.

i wont stop drinking coffee just because i learn that it can pose certain problems, i know coffee and alcohol are quite bad but i accept this, just as i accept that living in a big city is much more damaging to my health than living in the countryside. i still choose the city.

so does anyone have information that can be compared to coffee, alcohol, tobacco etc?

    waiting with an open mind

It’s amazing how every source leads back to a doctor/nutritionist who is trying to advertise a detox program aimed at trying to sell you a regimen. Not saying anything good about aspartame, but maybe actual sources to REAL research rather than a third-party who benefits from selling people information creating a very biased standpoint on the whole ordeal in the first place would be a good idea. No matter how far back I follow the “research” it just leads to another page about a third-party trying to promote a BS detox program. Maybe it’s time to wake up and use some Google Scholar rather than just googling “Aspartame Bad”. Here, I’ll start.
