Snake Control Methods

People can have an almost instinctual fear of snakes and most people are not going to want a bunch of snakes in their garden or hanging out on their lawn. Although there is no reason to fear most snakes, some of them can be poisonous and you may want to look for ways to get rid of any snakes that may be around your property.

Types of Snake Control

There are a number of methods of snake control that you can employ to attempt to ensure that snakes will not take away from your enjoyment of your lawn and garden.

Snake Repellents: Snake repellents attempt to make snakes uncomfortable enough to leave the area. Snake repellents come in both a chemical and electronic form. The chemical form uses smell to irritate the snake by blocking its sense of taste and smell. This will limit the amount of information a snake is able to gather about the surrounding environment and cause the snake to leave the area. You need to be careful when buying chemical snake repellents that the ingredients will not harm the environment or the people who regularly use your lawn and garden.

Electronic snake repellents emit a vibration into the ground that cause discomfort to the snake so that it will leave the area. This has the added benefit of getting rid of other pests and being environmentally friendly. You can even find an electronic snake repeller that is solar powered.

Snake Traps: Another method of snake control is to use traps which can be bought from a number of retailers.  There are two basic varieties of snake traps. One just lets the snake in and the snake is unable to get out again. The snake can move around in the box and this can cause some problems when it’s time to release the snake in a different area.
Other snake traps have a glue insert that cause the snake to become stuck inside the trap. The snake can then be taken to a different location and released. You won’t have to worry about the snake biting you because it’s stuck. With glue snake traps, you need to pour vegetable oil over the snake and glue to break down the glue and release the snake.

The important thing to remember when using snake traps is that you need to check them often so that any snakes that do get caught won’t be left to die slowly from starvation.

The main benefit of snake traps is that you can be sure that you are moving a snake off of your property. This is particularly useful if you have spotted a snake in your garden and want to make sure that it is gone.

Snake Fence: A snake fence is another method of snake control. A snake fence is basically a wire mesh fence that is strung across your property. Approximately six to twelve inches of the mesh is usually buried underground and the height of the snake fence is around twenty four to forty eight inches high. When looking at a snake fence, you need to ensure that the holes in the mesh are small enough to stop snakes from slithering through.

Good snake fencing can be a bit expensive but it is environmentally friendly and the snakes are not harmed in any way.  Snakes will simply turn away and go somewhere else when they run into an obstacle that they can’t cross.

It’s important to keep snakes under control so that you can enjoy your lawn and garden. By using proper methods of snake control, you won’t need to worry about unwanted visitors giving you a surprise as you enjoy and work in your garden.
