Organic Health News Update

It seems with each passing month the world just keeps becoming a crazier and crazier place.  We really do live in extraordinary times.  The massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has become the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history, the genetic modification of our food and of our animals continues to accelerate and global threats to our health just seem to continue to multiply.   Things are getting really frightening out there.  Fortunately there are websites like this that can help keep us all up to date about what is going on out there.  The following are some of the top organic health news stories from all over the globe….

The Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill

*One senior BP executive has indicated that the oil washing up on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico could be just the start of a 50-day build-up of pollution.

*Scientists are now telling us that the true danger from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill is from what is going on underneath the surface of the water.

*Subsea plumes of oil have been discovered as far as 142 miles from the damaged rig.

*Michigan State University professor Nathaniel Ostrom says that the oil spill could worsen and expand the oxygen-starved region of the Gulf of Mexico known as “the dead zone” for its inhospitability to marine life.

*Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, the coordinator of the federal response to the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, is warning that it could take years of hard work to fully scrub the Gulf Coast of all the oil.

*BP is being accused of trying to manipulate the search results on search engines like Google and Yahoo, as it attempts to salvage its battered image following the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico.

*Transocean, the firm hired by BP to operate the Deepwater Horizon offshore drilling rig, has announced that it will distribute $1 billion in dividends to shareholders even as oil continues to pour into the Gulf of Mexico.

*Transocean has also announced that it will make a whopping $270 million profit on the insurance policy for the rig.

Genetic Modification

*DuPont and Monsanto are engaged in a brutal war to see who will dominate the genetically modified food market, and you and your kids are the guinea pigs.

*Farmers throughout the U.S. are learning to cope with an increasing number of Roundup-resistant weeds.

*Researchers have found that one of Roundup’s inert ingredients can kill human cells – particularly embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells.

*Genetically modified crops have been given very enthusiastic backing by the U.K. Environment Secretary.

*The U.K.’s Motor Neurone Disease Association has announced that it will donate £800,000 to fund human/animal “hybrid embryo” cloning research by the same Edinburgh University team that created “Dolly” the cloned sheep.

*U.S. government funding for “synthetic biology” is very much on the rise.

*The U.S. Department of Agriculture is attempting to downplay the risks of genetically modified alfalfa, a crop previously banned by numerous federal courts.

*According to one new poll, Americans are increasingly becoming more tolerant of genetic engineering and embryonic stem cell research.

*ArborGen, a biotechnology firm affiliated with three large paper companies, got U.S. Department of Agriculture approval last month for field trials involving as many as 250,000 genetically modified trees planted at 29 sites over the next few years.

*A genetically modified variety of maize banned in the EU has been accidentally sown all across Germany.

*It has been announced that Monsanto will be dumping 60,000 sacks of hybrid corn seeds and vegetable seeds on the people of Haiti.

*Genetic scientists at one university in Germany have spliced a gene for a protein that activates under light into cells in the olfactory system of fruit flies.  The results of this experiment were quite bizarre.

*Prison inmates in Illinois are becoming seriously ill from all of the genetically modified soy that they are being fed.

Drug Warnings

*Shocking new research has found that expectant moms taking antidepressants have an astounding 68 percent increase in the overall risk of miscarriage.

*According to a new nationwide survey, an increasing number of American teens are getting high off of prescription drugs.

Health Warnings

*A new report based on several preliminary studies claims that nanosized particles of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide used in many sunscreens have the potential to cause serious harm.

*Phoenix-area health officials have confirmed that a relatively new, extremely toxic strain of bacteria has been found in hospitals and other health care facilities in the area.

*One team of scientists claims that the growing use of cellphones is what is really behind the disappearance of honey bees and the collapse of their hives.

*A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart says that alfalfa sprouts recalled because of salmonella poisoning were originally sold to more than 400 Wal-Mart stores in 15 U.S. states.

*Tritium was reported leaking from a nuclear plant in Vermont in January, and since that time it has turned up in monitoring wells at levels 100 times the federal Environmental Protection Agency’s safety limit for that substance in drinking water.

*A new study has shown that a “highly toxic” chemical in the glue on supermarket labels can seep through packaging and contaminate the food inside.

*The “environmental threat of Amish farming” is drawing increased scrutiny from the EPA.

Good News

*Researchers have found that an extract taken from green tea reduces cancer cells in the blood of patients with a form of leukaemia and may slow progression of the disease.

*Lastly, one team of researchers believes that they can prove that eating less will enable you to live longer.

I doubt that my post will be given much thought, but I guess that it is important that someone at least tries to explain why genetic engineering is important, and why a slow acceptance of genetic engineering into regular food-crop production is also important.

The primary reason behind genetically engineered foods being rejected for mainstream production is not because the crop itself is harmful or because the effects on humans are possibly dangerous. It is to prevent the spread of the genes that have been added to other crops, where they have not undergone rigorous testing. Genetically modified foods themselves are perfectly safe. The only real difference between “organic” and genetically modified foods is that GM food is actually MORE environmentally friendly, as they grow more efficiently than regular or organic crops.

There are dangers associated with GROWING GM crops, but not with consuming them.

Teenagers getting high of prescription drugs is not the fault of the drug. Quite a lot of substances can produce “high” effects; it is the fault of the teenagers and their parents.

The chances of a medicinal drug killing you is significantly lower than the chance of that drug saving your life. Everything you do in life has associated risk, deal with it.

Fascinating article – With recent events happening in Japan this too adds to the toxic devastation affecting the world. The nuclear impact on our oceans, food chain and water supplies will no doubt affect us for many more years to come.

I agree with Jon – we live in very troubled times – unless we start to treat the planet with a lot more respect it is simply a waiting game
